Disrupting ChemicalsThis new project aims to measurably reduce
Americans' exposure to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals
(EDCs). The project will focus on reducing exposure to the most
harmful EDCs in use in the near-term, while laying the foundation
for longer-term policy reform to prevent additional harmful EDCs
from being introduced. The Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals project
is a collaboration between Pew's Environment and Government
Performance portfolios.The Environment Portfolio focuses on
science-based, nonpartisan, and sustainable solutions to help
protect the planet and people. We work in partnership with
governments, Indigenous rights holders, intergovernmental
organizations, non-governmental organizations, local stakeholders,
scientists, and other researchers to advance public policy so that
nature and communities can thrive.The Government Performance
portfolio provides the nonpartisan research, solutions, and
momentum decisionmakers need to ensure our institutions improve the
health of people in the United States and enable them to
successfully climb the economic ladder. Those goals are pursued
through a wide range of the portfolio's policy-focused projects
(with explorations into new areas underway)-from ensuring states'
finances are prepared for future volatility, to unlocking gateways
to mental health care, to addressing the nation's lack of
attainable housing. Position OverviewThe project director, science,
endocrine disrupting chemicals, leads a team of approximately three
staff focused on synthesizing, communicating, and advancing
scientific research on endocrine disrupting chemicals, chemical
regulation, and related issues as part of a broader effort to
reduce exposure to the most harmful EDCs in the near term while
laying the foundation for longer term reform to prevent additional
harmful EDCs from being introduced to the economy and the
environment. This role requires a background in applied research in
human health, endocrinology, toxicology, or related fields, and
familiarity with health policy or the regulation of chemicals.
Strong leadership and communication skills are preferred, along
with expertise in balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders
through a nonpartisan lens. To achieve key tasks, the project
director must develop close working relationships and become a
trusted advisor to staff across each of the project's
workstreams.The project director reports to the director and is
based in Pew's Washington, DC, office. The position will
participate in Pew's core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
and will have the flexibility to work from home the remainder of
each week. This position is contingent upon board approval in June
2025.Responsibilities
- Foster a work environment that is diverse, equitable,
inclusive, accessible, and in line with Pew and the project's
related goals.
- Serve as a technical expert and thought leader in issues
related to EDCs. Maintain extensive and wide-ranging knowledge of
pertinent research, including but not limited to the health
effects, economic impacts, and potential substitute chemicals, of
EDCs. Cultivate and maintain detailed knowledge of public policy
discussions, regulatory changes, and other relevant changes to
policies and practices related to these key issues. By integrating
across domains of knowledge, provide strategic advice, place
results in appropriate context, and develop tangible and actionable
plans.
- Develop and implement clear, effective, and accessible research
in key issues related to health impacts, particularly around
exposure pathways, health impacts, regulation, and oversight of
toxic chemicals. Ensure proposed research is useful for target end
users or audiences, tailored to address appropriate research
questions, communicated accurately, and is rigorous and objective.
Manage and mentor a team of three professionals, including
day-to-day leadership and ongoing professional development.
- Work with the Director and leadership in adjacent workstreams
(i.e. Public Policy, Private Sector, and Cross-Cutting teams) to
identify needs and priorities for evidence within the project, and
to set achievable and measurable goals focused on better
understanding and communicating the human health impacts of
exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals.
- Design and implement strategies to achieve these goals.
- Manage contracted research partners to ensure that workflow is
going smoothly and is within budget.
- Oversee the publication, dissemination, and translation of
scientific findings in relevant research products.
- Work in close collaboration with government and private
industry partners, and other allies and organizations, to maximize
the impact of research.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with
decision-makers, government officials, national and international
institutions, and relevant NGOs in the field.
- Represent Pew publicly at conferences, seminars, and official
forums.
- Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide
objectives.Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Doctorate in a
science discipline preferred.
- Generally, ten years of applicable experience, including staff,
project, and/or consultant management experience in the for-profit
or non-profit sector, including academia.
- Expertise in a scientific field required, health-related
subject strongly preferred.
- Proven research and analytical skills. Deft at translating
scientific components and language into accessible and impactful
research whether that be through written or oral
communication.
- Experience managing a team effectively and building
collaborative relationships.
- Expertise working productively with a wide array of
stakeholders, both internal and external, and approaching issues
with a nonpartisan and objective mindset in a rapidly changing
environment.
- Familiarity with policy systems on a state and federal
level.
- Seasoned judgment and comfort in making decisions, justifying
recommendations, and being responsive, clear, and firm with
colleagues and partners.
- Effective and results-oriented planner for both short- and
long-term programmatic goals and orienting these goals to align
with the project team and institution's procedures.
- Demonstrated experience meeting multiple deadlines by
maintaining a high level of organization, and developing and moving
projects forward with independence and autonomy.
- Excellent oral, writing, and editing skills.TravelThis position
requires frequent domestic travel to meetings and conferences.Work
AuthorizationCandidates must be legally authorized to work in the
country for which they are seeking employment without visa
sponsorship.Salary Range$159,200 USD - $177,900 USDThe salary range
represents a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on
Pew's commitment to provide equitable and market-competitive pay.
